DS Automobiles to Test OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice Assistant in Car Models: What to Expect

Stellantis subsidiary DS Automobile is planning to integrate OpenAI‘s AI-based voice control system, ChatGPT, into its car models. This step is part of a test in which drivers will be asked to take measures to elicit valuable information from their vehicle about local attractions, the nearest toilet or places to stay by saying “OK Iris”. This test, which is to take place over the next six months, is expected to affect 20,000 drivers.

The plan is for vehicles equipped with the DS Iris infotainment system, including the DS 3, DS 4, DS 7 and DS 9 models, to benefit from ChatGPT. At the end of this test phase, the Group intends to evaluate whether it makes sense to make this technology standard equipment in vehicles.

The function, a supplement to the DS Iris infotainment system, is expected to be available in the respective national languages in Germany, France, Great Britain, Spain and Italy. Interested participants can register to take part in the test phase between October 19, 2023 and February 29, 2024.

According to DS Automobiles, the voice assistant is based on the 3.5 version of GPT and therefore remains at the level of information from September 2021. This means that it is not able to provide real-time information such as business opening hours or traffic congestion. However, it can provide useful and timeless information on a range of topics, including important traffic rules as well as background information on the history, economy and culture of the destination.

However, care should be taken with the information provided, particularly with regard to traffic rules. Users should do their own research before traveling, as OpenAI’s AI engine may prove to be inaccurate when it comes to hard facts. A prime example of this is the case of Slovenia, where the system provided incorrect information regarding the blood alcohol limit and neglected important details when displaying various other rules.

Originally, the article incorrectly stated that ChatGPT would also be integrated into other brands within the Stellantis Group, such as Opel and Peugeot. In fact, however, this only applies to the DS models mentioned during the pilot phase.
