Canva invests $200M in AI improvements and launches user content compensation program

Design platform Canva is investing significant resources into improving its AI capabilities by investing $200 million in content and AI licensing fees. This investment is used to repurpose content from users to train their AI models. However, users have the option to opt out of reusing their content, which gives them control over their intellectual property.

In an attempt to compensate users for their willingness to improve AI models, Canva has launched the Creator Compensation Program. Upon participation, users receive an initial payment and then receive monthly payments for ongoing use of their content. The $200 million allocated to this program will be paid out over a three-year period.

According to Canva, more than 150 million people have opted in, as well as 16 million paying subscribers who use their software worldwide. This large number of users represents a sufficient mass of content to effectively train Canva’s AI models.

To mark its 10th anniversary, Canva has launched its own AI program as well as Magic Studio, a suite of AI design tools. Magic Switch makes it possible to convert a design template into different formats. Magic Media is able to change textual specifications into images or videos, while Magic Design provides a consistent design for videos or presentations.

In addition, Canva has introduced Shield, a tool that allows companies to perform trust, security and privacy controls for Magic Studio applications. Canva already unveiled an AI image generator and text support in March, further indications of the platform’s continued pursuit of improvement and innovation.

More information on the new Magic Studio and its features can be found on Canva’s Magic Studio overview page. It’s a clear sign that Canva is investing in improving its services and products, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence and design tools. By giving its users the opportunity to share in its success, Canva positions itself as a company that values and promotes the interests of its community.
